Appearance, color & mineral information

• Bloodstone is a dark green quartz (chalcedony/jasper) with red specks (iron oxide).
• Color: opaque dark green with red iron speckles. The green color is due to chlorite and pyroxene.
• Hardness: 7 Mohs
• Durability: does not scratch easily, is resistant to moisture to a limited extent, and is resistant to sunlight.

History & Origin

Bloodstone is often divided into Indian and African bloodstone. Indian bloodstone is dark green and may have red "stains". African bloodstone is gray, green and red in shades and has a mosaic-like pattern. It can be found in India and Africa, as well as in Australia, the United States and most of Europe.

 It is believed to have been formed from the remains of the Holy Grail and the blood shed during the crucifixion of Christ, among other things. It is also believed to stop bleeding, heal wounds, and cleanse and nourish various internal organs.
